Environmentally-friendly construction

Sustainable building is on the advance. "Green" buildings meet higher-than-average ecological standards. Their modern fixtures and fittings help to save energy and therefore protect the environment.

In October 2009, Rheinmetall received the silver pre-certificate for the Lighthouse from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

Since January 2009, DGNB has been awarding the "Sustainable Building" certificate to projects that give priority to health-promoting and resource-saving criteria. The DGNB certification system was initiated by the DGNB in cooperation with the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS). It is a high-performance tool for the planning and evaluation of sustainable buildings. In order to guarantee a comprehensive quality perspective, all relevant areas of sustainable building are covered. Depending on the use profile, the evaluation includes approximately sixty criteria from the areas of ecology, economy, sociocultural and functional aspects, technology, processes and location. If these are met with excellence, the building receives either the gold, silver or bronze category certificate from the DGNB.

Preparations for DGNB certifications are underway for the doubleU and casa altra buildings in the company town on the former Rheinmetall AG works site in Düsseldorf-Derendorf.

Award for exemplary construction

In November 2010, the jury of the Heilbronn Association of Architects led by Chairman Professor Winfried Engels presented an award to the Customer Center at the KSPG location in Neckarsulm as part of the "Exemplary Building" architecture competition. The new administration building impresses with its sustainable, ecological and economic solutions in addition to the excellent everyday architecture.
